Part of the enduring appeal of the house of Chanel is the timelessness of founder Coco Chanel’s aesthetic. But her signature simplicity was actually a rebellious response to ornate and constricting late-19th and early-20th century fashions. Chanel first presented a shoulder bag in 1929. Tired of having to carry her purse in her hands on social occasions, she added a chain, inspired by the straps on soldiers’ bags. The now-iconic Flap Bag was introduced in February 1955, dubbed the 2.55 after the date of its release. The bag has changed little since, which is a testament to its enduring style. Karl Lagerfeld, who took over at Chanel in 1983, did make one notable addition to the Flap Bag: the CC turnlock, now a feature on the Classic Flap. Traditionally crafted in jersey, then lambskin and caviar leather, iterations in exclusive materials such as ostrich or alligator are collector favourites. The straps on the first Flap Bags were entirely made of chain metal. But when materials became scarce, Coco improvised by weaving leather into the chain to reduce the amount of metal needed.

Many of the design features of the first 2.55 can be directly linked to aspects of Chanel’s early life. According to fashion lore, the bag’s burgundy lining was inspired by the burgundy uniform she wore at the Aubazine Abbey orphanage in Corrèze, France, where she was raised. The zippered interior pocket, tucked beneath the top flap, is said to have been created for hiding love letters — Coco notoriously engaged in several torrid love affairs. The fact that she never married is reflected in the name given to the original rectangular clasp: Mademoiselle. Chanel’s personal history remains a rich creative source. In its updates of the 2.55, the house frequently makes use of design elements that recall events in its founder’s life, like the camelia flower given to her by her lover, Boy Capel, and the number 5 — the name of the perfume that made her famous. Lagerfeld uses this iconography on handbags and accessories to tell the story of the house’s founder, and to wink to collectors in the know.

RETURN POLICY

We have a NO RETURN policy, unless wrong item was sent.

If eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging with receipt or proof of purchase.

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

Damages and issues

THE VAULT Warranty

2-Year Limited Warranty

This warranty, provided by THE VAULT, covers the mechanical functions of your automatic watch, including (but not limited to) issues such as running fast/slow or inexplicably stopping functioning. You have a full two years from the date of purchase to send your watch back for servicing. This warranty is applicable exclusively to watches purchased from THE VAULT website. THE VAULT does not make representations on behalf of any watch manufacturer.

Our warranty is comparable to any manufacturer's warranty, with the distinction being that the service will be performed at THE VAULT's location. We employ expert watchmakers qualified to work on all major brands, utilizing factory-authorized replacement parts whenever applicable. Evidence of abuse beyond the factory-specified tolerances will void this warranty. All watches meet the manufacturer’s water resistance specifications, and maintaining the watch crown closed is crucial for preserving this water resistance and preventing damage to the movement.

Warranty Exclusions:

This warranty excludes any water damage due to a loose and/or open crown.
Damage to the crystal due to regular wear is not covered.
Replacement of quartz watch batteries is not offered under this warranty.

Authenticity: All watches sold on THE VAULT website are verified authentic and in working condition. We do not sell replica watches. "Unworn" watches include the original box, instruction booklet, and warranty paperwork/card (unless otherwise noted in the description). "Pre-owned" watches, also verified authentic with no aftermarket parts, are in good working condition but may not include the original box or warranty paperwork. Individual listings will specify what is included with the watch. In lieu of an original box, THE VAULT will provide a store watch box for listings without one.

THE VAULT is not an authorized dealer of the watch brands we sell. We obtain our watches from reputable sources dealing directly with authorized dealers and distributors. The watches may be in "unworn" or "unused" condition or "previously owned." In the absence of condition notes, the customer will assume the watch is "previously owned." THE VAULT makes no representations regarding the validity of any manufacturer’s warranties and does not act as a representative for customers to any watch manufacturers.
